Western Australia

January 1997

My daughter lived in the small township of Kellerberrin which straddles the Great Eastern Highway approximately 200Kms east of Perth. Whenever we went to visit I always made sure I took my cameras with me as it was a good base to work from. With Perth to the west and Kalgoorlie to the east and all the towns in-between, there was always plenty of trucking subjects to keep me happy. I will start in Kellerberrin and then move east before heading west.

KELLERBERRIN

I could always find a truck or two at the local grain silos or in the yard of Moylan's portable grain bins plus the servo or the yards of local contractors.

The main road through town was an excellent source of regular trucking traffic.

DOODLAKINE

Not a hub for trucks, but basically a pub and a school house on the Great Eastern Hwy. I was traveling past when I noticed some activity taking place behind the hotel which involved a truck, so I took a closer look. The Volvo was delivering a portable building for a nearby work site. Note the sliding bogie.

NANGEENAN

Just a fly speck on the map and just short of Merriden, Nangeenan is the home base for Marley's Transport who are a major operator throughout the wheat belt area of south western W A. I have visited Marley's many times and have always been made welcome.

And then we head west..........

MECKERING

Famous for being astride an earthquake fault line, Meckering is situated 70 Kms west of Kellerberrin also on the Great Eastern Hwy and sees its fair share of traffic pass through. It also boasts a very busy roadhouse which has a large parking area which caters for road trains and other large vehicles , meaning it is a must stop for me when heading west.

And then there were those that were just passing through.

NORTHAM

Another 35 Kms west and you can swing off the highway into Northam. It is here just outside the town centre that you will find the road train yard where  road trains traveling to Perth must be broken up into single units and those heading east can assemble road trains at this point. Unfortunately for truck photographers it is at its busiest early in the morning or late afternoon early evening.

THE LAKES

Situated about 50 Kms east of Perth, The Lakes is a small settlement consisting of a road house service station and a few houses. It is always worth a look in when passing by as there is usually a truck or two in the road house. I was caught up in road works nearby.

PERTH

Although there are plenty of good locations for truck action around Perth, this time I was with family and only managed a few shots of rigs leaving the Portland Cement plant in Burswood which was near our motel.
